Hesketh Golf Club

We all thoroughly enjoyed our day at Hesketh Golf Club. You have a very good club house, however the main attraction for any golfer is the golf course, and what a challenging course you have - it was well presented and as good as any golf course that we have had the pleasure to play on. Your internal people also made us very welcome from the golf professional, bar and catering staff. From a personal point, you have been a pleasure to deal with since I made contact with Hesketh Golf Club.

We stayed at The Cambridge House Hotel for 2 nights and it was very good. Lovely rooms, good food and nice sociable owners and staff.

John Berry October 2009.

When I telephoned to make the booking I spoke, I think, to someone in the Secretary`s office the person I spoke was extremely helpful and friendly. I quickly had an email confirmation of mybooking. Both experiences gave me a good impression of friendly efficiency.

On arriving at the professional`s shop on the date of play I was again met with by a very friendly and helpful member of staff. We were very pleasantly surprised to be given a small goody bag each and a card with the day`s security code on it. Both things which we did not receive at a nearby royal club a few weeks later.

I had read reports that the best holes were those surrounding the clubhouse and the rest were mediocre. Whilst those around the clubhouse are very good the remainder of the course is excellent and in very good condition. The small greens make a very good test especially with the stiff breeze on the day we played. The locker room and clubhouse were of a very high standard. We had a very good meal after the round, served again by very friendly staff and at a very reasonable price. I had been slightly apprehensive that such an old long standing club might be unfriendly and possibly stuffy. How wrong could I be as Hesketh is one of the friendliest clubs I have played and I have told all my golfing friends that it is a course they must play. The night before we played we stayed in the Ramada hotel in Southport and ate at the Warehouse. Both were excellent. very impressive

The condition of the course was excellent and I  enjoyed the layout although the water hazards did catch me out.

The staff in the clubhouse were fantastic the whole day and our meal at night was as good as you would get anywhere.

Please can you pass on my thanks to all of your staff.

We really enjoyed our round at Hesketh on Thursday and would say it easily stands its ground alongside the neighbours that we also played (Hillside, S&A, West Lancs and Formby).

Everyone we met was very friendly and the course well presented.

What a gem of a course, especially with 25 knots of wind to help. I look forward to coming back with the Royal Navy in June and congratulate you and your very pleasant team on providing a special day out.

May I take this opportunity to express , on behalf of my fellow golfers, many thanks and appreciation.

We visited Hesketh last Thursday. Everything about the experience was top draw. The Course, Pro-shop , Club house and weather (apart from the last 1/2 hour when we stood on the 17th tee and I didn't have my waterproofs).

I've played at many places , The Belfrey, Forest of Arden, Slayley hall ,- you know that kind of set up.

But playing Lindrick, Ganton , Worksop and and then your course, I've had to change my top ten!!!!
I'll make sure that I spread the gospel and I look forward to playing the course in the future.

The course was in excellent condition. I was just taken with the layout across the road. The potential is extraordinary. I particularly liked the seventh hole as particularly scenic. The finishing holes are, as we say in the States, "..all that and a bag of nuts!" Is there a more unique playing finish in golf? I suspect not. All the holes around the clubhouse nestled in the protective mounds. Number 2 with its TPC aura. It may not be an island, but you definitely don't want to miss the green. The club's history and its anecdotes from the past left thoughts and memories long after the golf was over. As the song goes, they can't take that away from me.

I would like to thank you and the Golf Club members and work associates for a splendid event last Thursday.

The organisation was faultless, the Greens, kitchen and bar staff were both courteous and professional and the members made us feel very welcome in deed.

All of our members who participated were in full agreement that this was a special day at a very special course indeed.

Once again, many thanks and we hope to see you again some time in the future.

Please pass on Wigan's sincere thanks for a most superb day yesterday.
Not only is Hesketh presenting itself as a truly excellent course, following your alterations, I was unable to identify a weak hole, but it's condition, given the poor weather of late, is well ahead of the game. All of this stands you in good stead for when you hold the Junior Open in July.
(You also may even knock Wigan out of the Top 100 best courses!!!)

Tim Dickinson - Captain Wigan Golf Club - April 2008

I did mean to drop a line (I have been away) and congratulate you on the presentation of the course for the recent Players Tour event. It's more than 20 years since I last played there and the new changes look great.

The whole day was run and organised superbly and the Players Tour members must be delighted to have well run events on courses like Hesketh on their itinerary. It helps lift the profile of golf in the north west. Please pass thanks on to the members.

"Your course is in great shape and certainly one of the most attractive I have ever played on with some clever and interesting holes"

Captain of a prestigious club along the coast.

"Over the years we have seen many improvements to the clubhouse and golf course"
Annual Charity event Organiser.

"We loved everything about the club especially the course, which was in wonderful condition"
Secretary/Manager of a South Devon Club.

"And so to Hesketh, the club I would most like to join if I lived in the area. All the northwest venues are exceptionally friendly, but even in that context, Hesketh stands out. Opened in 1885, it is the oldest of the Southport clubs, a mixture of parkland and links set in a prosperous suburb among substantial Victorian villas. The course may be less classical than some of its rivals, but is chosen to host qualifying competitions for the Open whenever it is held at Birkdale. And its members greet passing strangers as if they were life-long friends. Don't miss it".

Quote from the Sunday Times following Minty Clinch's visit to the club.
