HeskethGolf Club
On Sunday 18th February 2024, a celebration event was held in honour of the Club's Honorary Life President, Mr Derek Holden as he celebrates his 75th year of membership and 90th birthday later this year.
Mr Holden joined the club in the Autumn of 1949, becoming Captain in 1967, aged just 33.
In the club's centenary year, 1985, Mr Holden was chosen to hold office of Captain once again, alongside prominent ladies member, Mrs Eileen Winders.
As well as two years as Club Captain, Mr Holden served on the Club's Council for 15 years, 5 of which as Chairman.
In 2006 Mr Holden was elected to the role of Honorary Life President.
Mr Holden has played a significant role in the development of Hesketh Golf Club and its members over the course of his membership.
As a dedicated ambassador for golf, Mr Holden served as President of the Lancashire Union of Golf Clubs in 1997, just the third Hesketh member to hold such office.
The club was pleased that the current President of the Lancashire Union of Golf Clubs, Mr John Moorcroft was able to attend the event on Sunday. We wish to thank Mr Moorcroft for his kind words about Mr Holden and Hesketh Golf Club.
Also in attendance was the Captain of the Society of Liverpool Golf Captains, Mr John Morris.
In 1982 Mr Holden was accepted for membership of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, a membership he retains to this day. Each year Mr Holden has generously entertained and continues to entertain the Captain and other club members to golf at St Andrew’s.
The club was delighted to receive a letter from the Royal and Ancient Golf Club wishing Mr Holden well and congratulating him for his length of membership and service to the game of golf.
As one of the clubs most dedicated ever members, the Board of Directors considered what would be the most fitting tribute to recognise Mr Holden's service to the club.
It gave the Chair of the Board, Mr Ian Garden great pleasure to present Mr Holden with a plaque signifying that the club's Main Lounge be renamed the Derek Holden Lounge, following in the footsteps of the Bentley brothers and Mrs Eileen Winders having rooms named after them.
